- Read pages 49-78 (including chapters 3-5) in John Ortberg's Soul Keeping.
- Watch the 25 minute #2 video lecture "What Is the Soul?" on the Soul Keeping DVD.
- Create a sermon based on Mark 4:1-20 focusing on the soil as a metaphor for the soul. (I'm hoping that you will be creating a resource that you will eventually be able to use outside of class.)
If you have never created a sermon before you might find that my Simple Sermon hand-out will provide you with a structure for creating one.
In the sermon talk about your own personal experiences as illustrations of the types of soil.
Make sure that you appropriately quote John Ortberg at least twice during the sermon.
Lead your listeners to understand how sin damages the soul and makes it unresponsive to God's Word.
While affirming the resilience of the Word, challenge people to deal with the things which damage the soil/soul.
You may either write out the sermon verbatim or record it on video, edit it, and then post it privately on YouTube. Then send Brad the link so he can watch it. - Email your assignment to Brad -- bboydston@piu.edu. Embed your writing in the email (that is, do not attach a document).
